Contentful Merge app

Contentful’s Merge app allows teams to more safely and efficiently iterate over their content models by providing a visual interface for identifying and resolving the differences between environments’ content models.

This case study is a work in progress, but I'd love to walk you through the work!

Role

At Contentful, I was embedded as a product designer on the Developer Workflows team with a product manager (PM; Domile Janenaite), an engineering manager (Ivett Ördög), and six engineers (Vincenzo Bianco, Andreas Egger, Maya Karabuła-Stysiak, Marco Link, Janko Marklein, Meike Pollakowski).

I participated in customer interviews leading up to this opportunity, as well as analysed existing research around the topic of content model migrations to better understand and prioritise the problems at hand.

I led the solutioning phase for the Merge app, collaborating closely with our opportunity lead (Marco) and PM to scope and define what and how we would be building. Among other things, we worked together to determine the most suitable algorithmic approach for comparing content types, to decide whether our solution should be built as a separate app or as part of the main Contentful web app, and to prioritise features for an initial release.

Ultimately, I delivered designs and copy to be implemented, which had been through many iterations and rounds of feedback from both internal parties and existing customers.

During the delivery phase of this opportunity, I continued working closely with my team to realise what we had designed. We also used this opportunity to improve our team's process with better documentation of work and a different story-writing approach, which resulted in 2-3x velocity now sustained over many sprints.
